Snow White & The Huntsman

Watched With: My Snooqums & The Gossip Gang @ Cathay EHub (7/6)
Genre: Fantasy / Action

Snow White and the Pornsman.

The evil queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) has weasled her way to the throne with the help of her (rather chee-ko-pek hairstyle) brother Finn (Sam Spruell) and some witchcraft of course.

Her reign in the land is threatened by only one - Show White (Kristen Stewart). So she sends The Hunstman (Chris Hemsworth) to capture her and kill her so that the evil queen may rule forever.
But protecting Snow White are 7 dwarves and also her childhood love William (Sam Claflin).

So mirror mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all

It's actually very fitting that Charlize Theron stands in the middle of the poster because she really steals the show. They should have just called the movie "The Evil Queen from Snow White" because she's probably the best reason to watch the movie.

Another thing I found absolutely amazing is how they rendered the dwarves.
If it's CGI, then it's seamless but it seems like a lot of work... Why?
They actually had real full sized people playing the dwarves! No shit! Seriously!

I'm talking about people like Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost(!) and even Brian Gleeson! (WHAT? NO WARWICK DAVIS??)

Well anyways, to be honest this movie was kind boring in the middle.
Early parts okay. Last parts okay but in the middle it's a real drag-fest.

I'm thinking DVD is a safe bet on this one.

The Raid: Redemption

Watched With: My Brother & Yana @ The Cathay (26/05)
Genre: Action

"Dan jangan lupa.. bersenang-senang..."

Crime lord Tama (Ray Sahetapy) controls the city from his 30-storey fortress.
With his henchmen Mad Dog (Yayan Ruhian) and Andi (Donny Alamsyah), he is untouchable..

A SWAT team led by Jaka (Joe Taslim) must lead his men to capture Tama
One of those men is Rama (Iko Uwais) - a rookie cop whose wife is expecting their first child.
But it seems like more of a suicide mission than anything else.

BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR SO FAR.

Nuff said.

Final Vedict:

Dark Shadows

Watched With: My Snooqums @ Cathay EHub
Genre: Comedy / Horror

"They tried stoning me, my dear. It did not work."

Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) is the heir to a rich fishing industry. He is cursed by a spurned witch Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green) to spend all time as a vampire.
He awakens in modern days to find his family bloodline still alive but his business in ruins.

So he sets forth to try and rejuvenate the lives of Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer), Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller), Carolyn Stoddard (Chloë Grace Moretz), David Collins (Gulliver McGrath) and family physician Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter) with the help of his new henchman Willie Loomis (Jackie Earle Haley).

He even has time to fall in love with the family nanny Victoria Winters (Bella Heathcote) whilst trying to save his family fishing business from the evil Angelique who is also still alive and well. Mayhem and comedy obviously ensues.

This movie is supposes to be based on an old TV show. Maybe it should have been left as that. This seems like a vanity project by Tim Burton. Just another excuse to make a movie even if it's boring as hell.

But I have to say that Johnny Depp steals the show as usual.

Might wanna give this one a miss kiddies.

The Avengers

"You wanna know my secret?"

So this is the big one that everyone was waiting for.
Finally The Mighty Avengers hit the big screen and everyone is clamouring to get a glimpse.

Loki is back on earth and now holds the power to bring humans to their knees or be exterminated.
Nick Fury assembles earth's mightiest heroes to combat this new enemy and he's going to need all the help he can get.

Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye all come together to battle Loki and his space minions. Can they put aside their personal battles to save earth?

Okay my advice is to watch all the individual superhero movies leading up to this movie.
You could choose not to but you'd lose out because quite a number of plot points originate from movies like Captain America and Thor.

And I guess this movie doesn't disappoint.
The early bits are actually kinda boring if you ask me but I guess it really picks up in the end.

And stay after the credits for 2 extra scenes.

Well it's finally over.

We've read about how it happens and now we finally get to watch it.
The saga of Harry Potter vs Lord Voldemort is finally over.

For fans or non-fans - as long as you've been following the series, you know you're gonna wanna watch this final installment to close the chapter of Harry Potter.

It's been one of the better series in recent times.
Enjoyable indeed.

Paranormal Activity 3

Watched With: My Snooqums, Fadila, Aziz Rai, Diana & Harry @ GV Tampines Mall (20/10)
Snacks: Iced Lemon Tea
Genre: Horror

I used to have a cat named Toby.

Dennis (Christopher Nicholas Smith) and Julie (Lauren Bittner) live a normal life in 1988 with their little girls Katie (Chloe Csengery) and Kristi (Jessica Tyler Brown).
Well. Normal for awhile at least.

Weird things start happening in the house and 'presence' in the house is causing more than a little mischief.
Family friend Randy (Dustin Ingram) and even Grandma have trouble believing that something supernatural is amiss.

They have to learn the hard way...

And yes you have to watch the first two installments - Paranormal Activity & Paranormal Activity 2 before you watch this.
It's basically a prequel that reveals to you the origin of the happenings in the first 2 movies.

But having said that, I think you're going to be really disappointed with this one especially if you're comparing between all 3 movies.

I'm not going to spoil anything. Go watch it then.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon (Digital)

Watched With: My Snooqums, Kak Dila & Aziz Rai @ The Cathay (05/12)
Snacks: Green Tea
Genre: Action / Sci-Fi

What's the big deal about the girl again?

Sam Witwicky's (Shia LaBeouf) heroics in saving the world alongside the Autobots have gone forgotten.
He is now job-hunting desperately with supportive girlfriend Carly Spencer (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) and hopes to get something tied down before his overbearing parents Ron (Kevin Dunn) and Judy (Julie White) arrive to visit.

He eventually lands a job with the help of Carly's rich and pretentious boss Dylan (Patrick Dempsey). But all is not well.

The Autobots led by Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) find out that the US government had lied to them and it turns out the the landing on the moon in the 60s was a cover up because they found something there. Something big.
So Optimus goes up and manages to revive an ancestor Sentinel Prime (Leonard Nimoy) who holds the technology to destroy the Decepticons once and for all.

When Megatron (Hugo Weaving) hears about it obviously he's not going to just sit idly by despite being injured in his previous meeting with Optimus.

When Defense Officer Mearing (Frances McDormand) starts revealing more secrets, it is up to the Autobots, Sam, Simmons (John Turturro) and N.E.S.T agents Lennox (Josh Duhamel) and Epps (Tyrese Gibson) to save the day.
But... there is more than meets the eye.

Firstly let me say that there is no difference between the new girl and Megan Fox. They both suck.

Next, let me say I REALLY hate Ken Jeong (AKA that irritating guy from The Hangover series). I really hate him.

Lastly, i consider this movie the best of the Transformers series.

After the crap movie that was Transformers 2, I'd say this was an improvement definitely. Unfortunately it's running time is a bit too long and not because of action sequences but too much talking if you ask me.

Well worth the watch I'd say.
I heard the 3D version wasn't worth it. I'd say Digital is still the best bet.
Unless you want a headache from wearing the 3D glasses for 2 and 1/2 hours.

Your Highness

Watched With: Nobody @ The Cathay (01/07)
Snacks: Green Tea
Genre: Comedy

"With magic. Motherfucker."

Prince Fabious (James Franco) is brave and valiant while his brother Prince Thadeous (Danny McBride) is the exact opposite.

When the evil wizard Leezar (Justin Theroux) kidnaps Prince Fabious' bride-to-be Belladonna (Zooey Deschanel), King Tallious (Charles Dance) orders both brothers to quest forth and stop Leezar from ruling the kingdoms.

Accompanied by Thadeous' page Courtney (Rasmus Hardiker) and fellow questor Isabel (Natalie Portman), they journey through the land to face treachery in the form of Minotaurs, perverted wise men, traitors, a giant hand (?) and naked women (!).

You know what?
When I saw the trailer, I thought to myself "this is fucking funny!".
And then I watched the movie and thought to myself "Wow! most of the funny stuff in this movie was shown in the trailer!".

The funny one-liners from the trailer? Yup that's about it.
Anything else spectacularly funny? i'm afraid not.

Sadly, alas, it is true.
As much as I am an advocate of crass and crude humour, the trailer pretty much covers everything.
Maybe a bit of extras here and there but nothing much actually.

This movie will be a great DVD to show when you have friends over.
But not really worth it to watch in the cinema.

Green Lantern

Watched With: Myself @ GV Vivo City (25/6)
Snacks: Mixed Nuts & Iced Lemon Tea
Genre: Superhero / Action / Adventure
Hidden Scene: Yes

"In brightest day, in blackest night. No evil *yawn*"

Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) is a helluva fighter jet pilot.
But trying to live up to his father's legacy and memory makes him a very volatile man which is not good to employers Ferris Avionics including heir and old flame Carol Ferris (Blake Lively).

On the other end of the spectrum, Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) is a loner and a genius but also trying to love to his father's, Senator Hammond (Tim Robbins) high expectations.

But galaxies away, a different battle is brewing.
Old nemesis of The Green Lantern Corps - Parallax - has awoken and taken revenge against Abin Sur (Temuera Morrison), the mightiest of the Green Lanterns.
And now his ring must choose a worth successor.

When Hal is chosen, senior Green Lantern Sinestro (Mark Strong) does not believe he has what it takes to become a Lantern.
Even with help from Tomar-Re (Geoffrey Rush) and Kilowog (Michael Clarke Duncan), it will be a difficult mission for him.

Will Hal be able to face his demons and be fearless?
Will he be able to prove himself a worth Green Lantern?

Yes. He will do it. By boring the hell out of you.

I have to say that this was the most boring superhero movie ever.
Seriously.
Let's face it. Green Lantern was not even a very exciting superhero in the comic books and now his supremacy in boredom is transferred to a movie.

They should have made Keanu Reeves the Green Lantern.
And what a waste of talent by casting Mark Strong as Sinestro.

Well in his defense though.
People kept saying "Hey! But Ryan Reynolds is already Deadpool what!!"
Well Deadpool is Marvel and Green Lantern is DC FYI.

You should be making noise about Chris Evans aka 'The Human Torch from Fantastic Four' in the upcoming 'Captain America' because those 2 are Marvel.

Final Verdict: Worth $3 out of a $10 ticket

PS i'm going to back to the old ratings after this.

X-Men: First Class Digital

Watched With: My Snooqums @ The Grand Cathay (12/06)
Snacks: Hotdog Combo
Genre: Superhero / Action

I'm confused. But it's okay.

Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender) are two different individuals with very similar paths.
As powerful mutants, it is their destiny t shape the future of mankind.

Leading a team of young mutants learning to control their powers is no easy task.
It is up to Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Angel (Zoë Kravitz), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Banshee (Caleb Landry Jones), Darwin (Edi Gathegi) and Havok (Lucas Till) to find it within themselves to face their enemies. And themselves.

Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) with right-hand woman Emma Frost (January Jones) and henchmen Riptide (Álex González) and Azazel (Jason Flemyng) are bent on starting World War III and ensuring the rise of mutant-kind.
And it is up to the X-Men to stop them.

Well I tell you what.
I guess this movie was actually pretty good. On its own.

I had a lot of people say to me "Wow now I know the story behind the X-Men" and I guess that movie does show that but if were a comicbook fan then perhaps you may spots the obvious differences. (Moira MacTaggert is a CIA agent? Really??)
But I won't go into that. I think not many people know that I'm a huge X-Men fan from my comicbook collecting days.

And I also won't go into the digs at the previous movies (like cameos by Hugh Jackman and Rebecca Romijn)

What I will say is that Michael Fassbender made a very convincing show as Magneto.

And I know people like Mr-Jab and Mr-Dopamine-Dreamer will be able to appreciate the cameos put in by old timers like Rade Serbedzija, Ray Wise and Michael Ironside.

So this was pretty good movie overall.
A different direction from the first few movies but good nonetheless.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Watched With: 731 SIR @ GV Vivo City (22/05)
Snacks: Hotdog Combo
Genre: Action / Adventure / Comedy

Shiver me timbers.

Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is back.
This time he is on the quest for the Fountain of Youth which is also being sought after by the Spanish, old foe Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and fearsome pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane).

Joining him on this quest is old flame Angelica Malon (Penélope Cruz) who is as much a pirate as she is a gentleman (does that even make sense?!).

So onwards they go to a journey of mermaids and danger at every turn.

Will Captain Jack get the better of his enemies this time?
Arr mateys tune in to find out.

Okay first let me say that you do not need to watch the first 2 installments of the 'Pirates' series to know what is going on in this movie (God knows I didn't) because this is more than a spin-off.
And as someone who does not enjoy this particular nonsense series, I'm going to go ahead and say this movie sucks.

I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why people like this movie so much.
Yeah sure maybe swashbuckling adventure for the kids.
But everyone else? Seriously?
And it can't be Johnny Depp's looks because he looks like shit as a pirate.
And yes sure he is charming but surely there are a large number of you, like me, who is irritated by this 'Jack Sparrow' character.

If they wanted to name him after a bird - i recommend 'Jack Cock'.

Final Verdict: Worth $0.00 out of a $10 ticket

Pries†

Watched With: My Snooqums @ Cathay EHub (14/05)
Snacks: Grape Soda
Genre: Horror / Ac†ion

See wha† I did †here with the 't' in †he shape of a cross (†)?
Cos i†'s vampires and pries†s and... oh forget i†.

In a post-apocalyptic future, the world is a wasteland.
The war between humans and vampires was tipped with the help of the 'Priests' - who were specially trained by the church to combat the vampire threat.
But after the war was won, there was no longer any use for them.

But suddenly the threat from the vampires has somehow returned.

Priest (Paul Bettany) must now race against time to rescue his niece Lucy (Lily Collins) after his brother is killed by the vamps.
Together with sheriff Hicks (Cam Gigandet), they must race to find Black Hat (Karl Urban) who seems to be behind everything. Or is he?

Meanwhile, Head of the Church Monsignor Orelas (Christopher Plummer) decides that Priest must be punished for going against the church.
For "Going against the Church is going against God" so he sends Priestess (Maggie Q) to capture him and bring him to justice.

Oh please give me a break.
The problem with this movie is that it's trying to combine too many elements from previous concepts that it loses itself.
Mad Max meets Constantine? Seriously?
And I can't tell if this movie never got started or if it started in the middle because it was running at a very weird pace.

Never liked Paul Bettany much. But I am especially disappointed with Cam Gigandet.
After his badass performance in 'Never Back Down' he seems to be taking on more and more rubbish roles.

This is one for the DVD rentals kiddies.

Source Code

Watched With: Nobody @ Cathay EHub (03/05)
Snacks: Green Tea
Genre: Sci-Fi / Action

8 minutes.

Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) awakens on a commuter train bound for Chicago but he does not feel like himself.
That is because he is in the body of Sean Fentress and he has been placed onboard that train to find a bomber before the train blows-up.

He has been placed in this scenario by Dr. Rutledge (Jeffrey Wright) and Colleen Goodwin (Vera Farmiga) for a new project called 'Source Code' where they can place an individual's mind in someone else's body and relive the last 8 minutes before a specific event and hopefully they get the information they need to solve the mystery and prevent further disaster.
And after 8 minutes, everything resets.

So Capt. Stevens must figure out who is the bomber on the train.
Could it be Christina Warren (Michelle Monaghan) who seems to know him?
Could it be Max Denoff (Russell Peters) a disgruntled and trouble celebrity on the train?
Or could it be any one of the dozens of suspicious characters on the train?

Whoever it is - he has 8 minutes.

Okay sure the idea is interesting.
Not new. But interesting.
Time travel and flashbacks are all too common by now.
In fact to be honest I would hardly classify this movie under those categories.

And alas this is one of those movies that I cannot reveal too much without spoiling everything but I will tell you 3 things.

  1. I don't like Jake Gyllenhal.
  2. Rusell Peters is ridiculous.
  3. I figured it out half-way. Cos I'm so smart.

I guess this movie isn't so bad. If you've got nothing better to watch.

**PS I'm trying out a new rating system suggested by Mr-Jab. What do you think?**

Fast Five

Watched With: My Snooqums and her siblings
Snacks: Popcorn, Breaded Hotdog and Grape Soda
Genre: Action / Adventure
Hidden Scene: Yes. After the initial credits

"And above all else, we never ever let them get into cars."

Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) are back.
Together with Mia (Jordana Brewster), they are still on the run from the FBI and make their way to Rio De Janeiro.

There, old friend Vince (Matt Schulze) hooks them up with a job that goes awry and now the lot wanna give some payback to kingpin Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida) who controls all the crime in the city.

So they rope in old pals Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Ludacris), Han (Sung Kang), Gisele (Gal Gadot), Leo (Tego Calderon) and Santos (Don Omar) to pull off the ultimate revenge job.

But hot on their heels is FBI enforcer Agent Hobbs (Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson) and local cop Elena (Elsa Pataky) who are bent on stopping the gang and bringing them in to the law.

If you're expecting to see hot-looking cars like in 2 Fast 2 Furious then you're not gonna find it.
If you're looking for super racing like the first Fast & Furious then look elsewhere.
But if you're looking for the best elements of the whole franchise then you've come to the right place.
(Definitely better than that piece of shit Part 4)

So this is the whole gang back for more and to be honest I guess this was probably one of the more entertaining movies in the franchise.
Maybe not as many flashy cars or fancy driving but we're familiar enough with the characters and there's enough action to keep us interested so I guess it wasn't so bad after all.

And The Rock is better here than his recent roles.
The Rock vs Vin Diesel = fierce or what!

I guess you could say this was kinda like the big reunion before they end the series but...

Thor

Watched With: Nobody @ Cathay Cineleisure (29/04)
Snacks: Green Tea
Genre: Action / Adventure
Hidden Scene: Yes. After the credits.

 Under the 'Bo Pian Act'.

Asgard is ruled with a mighty fist by Odin the Allfather (Anthony Hopkins) with his hopes that his two sons - Thor the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) and Loki the Trickster God (Tom Hiddleston) may one day carry on the glorious reign of their realm and protect it from the Frost Giants led by King Laufey (Colm Feore).

But a traitor seems to be plotting and Thor is cast out from Asgard and sent to Earth as a punishment.
There he meets scientists Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) and Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings).

When the traitor executes his plan, it is up to Thor and his friends Sif (Jaimie Alexander), Hogun (Tadanobu Asano), Fandral (Josh Dallas), Volstagg (Ray Stevenson) and Heimdall (Idris Elba) to keep not only Asgard but all the realms safe.

In the mean time, Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) of S.H.I.E.L.D is still running about trying to gather all the information he can get for Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

Well I'll tell you what kiddies.
This was just a filler movie. Seriously.
If you're a fan of comic-book superheroes (like myself) then you'll have no choice but to watch this movie because we all know it's leading up to the big Avengers movie in 2012.

Sure the girls will go ga-ga over Chris Hemsworth and all that but this movie was a bit too special-effects laden.
I watched the Digital showing and I can't imagine if I had caught the 3D version.
And for the record - I think Kenneth Branagh was the wrong choice for this movie.

Well anyways go watch for a weekend show if you're in the mood.
I won't say it was a very bad movie but I guess I just expected more.

And of course there were plenty of references to the rest of the Avengers here.
Iron-Man. Hulk. You can even spot Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) in there.

Someone let me know if the 3D version was any good okay.

Final Verdict:
